About Kern County Museum
Founded by County Ordinance in 1941 after a 1929 Bakersfield Lion's Club appeal brought overwhelming donations of historical materials. Delayed by World War II, the museum officially opened in 1945 in the Chamber of Commerce building. Now accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
Pioneer Village spans 16 acres with 50+ original historic buildings relocated from across the county, including a schoolhouse, church, train station, hotel, courthouse, and photography studio. Notable structures include the 1904 Beale Memorial Clock Tower (destroyed in 1952 earthquake, rebuilt here in 1964) and Merle Haggard's childhood homeβa 1910 railroad refrigerator car converted to housing in 1935.
The award-winning "Black Gold: The Oil Experience" exhibition documents Kern County's oil heritage with hands-on exhibits, a wooden oil derrick, and a pumping unit with six wooden pumps. Additional features include the Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center and Neon Plaza.
