About the History Division
The History Division of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County preserves and interprets the rich human history of Southern California. Since 1913, the division has collected materials documenting the region's transformation from Native American homeland through Spanish colonial, Mexican, and American periods to the modern megacity.
Collections include the William S. Hart Ranch and Museum in Newhall, extensive photograph archives, costumes and textiles, and artifacts from early Los Angeles. The division maintains research facilities supporting scholars studying Los Angeles and Southern California history.
The museum's history galleries explore topics including early Los Angeles, California's diverse communities, and the growth of the entertainment industry. Special exhibitions regularly feature materials from the division's extensive holdings.
