About the Museum

Interprets Savannah from James Oglethorpe's founding through modern times. Housed in restored 1860 train shed with exhibits on Revolutionary War siege and Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low.

Founded in 1996 and located in Tricentennial Park, the Savannah History Museum occupies the historic Central of Georgia Railway passenger shed, a National Historic Landmark built in the 1850s and 1860s. The museum houses more than 10,000 artifacts documenting Savannah's fascinating history from its founding in 1733 to the present day. The building itself serves as a living artifact, providing an authentic setting for exploring the city's railroad heritage with vintage engines, passenger cars, coal cars, and cabooses on display.

The museum's diverse collections include iconic pieces of American culture such as the bench from "Forrest Gump," one of Johnny Mercer's Oscar Awards, and the carriage owned by Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low's family. Military history exhibits span from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm, featuring extensive collections of weapons, uniforms, and artifacts. Special exhibits highlight the 1779 Siege of Savannah—the second bloodiest battle of the American Revolution—with guided battlefield talks led by staff in period militia uniforms. Additional highlights include an 1890 steam locomotive, a 1902 Crestmobile (predating the Ford Model A), an antique cotton gin, and a fashion exhibit displaying women's evening gowns from the late 1800s to the 1960s. Just across the street, Battlefield Memorial Park commemorates the 8,000 soldiers who fought in the Battle of Savannah on October 9, 1779.
