About the Organization

National Park Service site preserving Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, and other historic buildings central to American Revolution and founding of the United States. Features tours and exhibits on constitutional history.

America's Most Historic Square Mile

Spanning approximately 54 acres in the heart of Philadelphia, Independence National Historical Park encompasses about 20 buildings open to the public, making it one of the most concentrated collections of American historical sites in the nation. Beyond the iconic Independence Hall and Liberty Bell, the park includes Congress Hall (where the U.S. Congress met from 1790-1800), the Second Bank of the United States with its extensive portrait collection of founding fathers including Alexander Hamilton and Patrick Henry, Franklin Court honoring Benjamin Franklin, the Bishop White House dating to 1787, Christ Church Burial Ground, Carpenters' Hall, and the President's House Site. Together, these sites tell the comprehensive story of America's founding and early government.

Planning for America's 250th Anniversary

In preparation for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, Independence Hall is undergoing comprehensive interior preservation work and will be closed to visitors from November 13, 2025, through January 28, 2026. This crucial restoration ensures the birthplace of American democracy will be preserved for future generations. During this period, the park is providing alternate experiences for visitors to learn about Independence Hall and the foundational documents signed within its walls. The Liberty Bell Center remains open year-round free of charge, and most park attractions do not charge admission, making this essential American history accessible to all.

Guided Tours and Visitor Experience

Entry to Independence Hall is by guided tour only, with groups limited to just 50 people per tour to preserve the intimate experience of walking where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were debated and signed.
