About the Denton County Office of History & Culture

Preserving History in a Landmark Courthouse

The Denton County Office of History and Culture operates as a public service of Denton County government, providing educational opportunities and learning resources to residents and visitors. The office is headquartered in the magnificent 1896 Courthouse-on-the-Square, a Romanesque Revival landmark that anchors downtown Denton's historic square. This beautifully preserved courthouse serves as both a working museum and the home base for the county's history preservation efforts.

Multiple Historic Sites

Beyond the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, the office manages the Denton County Historical Park, located just a few blocks from the downtown square at 317 West Mulberry Street. The Historical Park is home to three additional museums: the Bayless-Selby House Museum (a Victorian-era home), the Taylor Log Cabin (representing early pioneer life), and the Denton County African American Museum. Together, these sites provide comprehensive coverage of Denton County's diverse heritage from its earliest days through the present.

Special Collections and Research

The Office of History and Culture maintains Special Collections featuring documents, photographs, and artifacts documenting early Denton County people and places. Research appointments are available for scholars, genealogists, and anyone interested in exploring the county's history. The office works closely with the Denton County Historical Commission and the Texas Historical Commission to preserve, protect, and promote local history.
