About the Nueces County Historical Society

Preserving Coastal Bend History Since 1952

The Nueces County Historical Society (NCHS) was formed on November 8, 1952, in Judge Noah Kennedy's office in the historic 1914 Nueces County Courthouse. The society was later incorporated on August 25, 1988, with Mr. Cecil E. Burney, principal attorney of the Corpus Christi law firm Wood & Burney, serving as lead incorporator. For over seven decades, NCHS has maintained a constant presence in Corpus Christi and Nueces County, bringing together lay historians, professors, and avid collectors who share insights into the rich history of the Coastal Bend region.

Programs and Presentations

The society holds eight General Meetings each season, meeting on the first Tuesday of every month from September through April. These meetings take place at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 430 S Carancahua Street in downtown Corpus Christi. Each gathering features historical presentations covering topics from the region's earliest Native American inhabitants through the Spanish colonial era, the Texas Revolution, and the development of modern Corpus Christi. The season culminates with the annual Daniel E. Kilgore History Awards Banquet held in May, honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to local historical preservation and research.

Collections and Research

NCHS members regularly update collections and research materials compiled over the society's long history. The organization works in collaboration with the Nueces County Historical Commission, which maintains a display case on the first floor of the Nueces County Courthouse. The Corpus Christi area celebrates its heritage through landmarks including the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History at 1900 N. Chaparral and the historic homes of Heritage Park, offering visitors multiple opportunities to explore the region's fascinating past.
