About the Museum

One of America's oldest historical societies, now operating as Virginia Museum of History & Culture. Houses extensive collections documenting Virginia's role in American history from Jamestown settlement through Civil War, colonial period, and state's influence on founding of the nation.

Unparalleled Collections and Archives

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture houses an astounding collection of more than 9 million items representing 16,000 years of human history in Virginia—making it one of the most comprehensive state history collections in the nation. Notable treasures include the tennis racquet, bag, and wrist band that belonged to Richmond native Arthur Ashe, a portrait of George Washington by Charles Peale Polk, and the Bowie knife taken from John Brown at Harper's Ferry in 1859 by J.E.B. Stuart. The museum's Research Library provides exceptional access to primary sources, manuscripts, and rare documents, operating Monday through Saturday with expanded hours on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

Current and Upcoming Exhibitions

The museum leads Virginia's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary with "Give Me Liberty: Virginia & the Forging of a Nation," opening March 22, 2025—the 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry's famous speech. This groundbreaking exhibition will be the first major show in the nation marking the semiquincentennial and will include traveling presentations across the state through January 4, 2026. Permanent exhibitions include "The Story of Virginia," featuring over 500 artifacts chronicling the state's journey from early American Indian settlements to the 21st century, and "Our Commonwealth," which immerses visitors in the landscapes, foodways, industries, and cultural diversity of Virginia's five distinct regions.
