About the Lynchburg Historical Foundation
Preserving the Hill City Since 1972
The Lynchburg Historical Foundation was established on November 13, 1972, through the merger of two earlier organizations: the Lynchburg Historical Society, founded in 1934, and the Historic Lynchburg Foundation, formed in 1967. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered at 325 12th Street, the foundation works to promote an understanding of Lynchburg's history, architecture, and culture through educational programs, exhibits, publications, events, and community outreach.
Preservation is at the heart of the foundation's mission. Its stated purposes include special projects involving the acquisition, restoration, and preservation of sites, buildings, structures, documents, and objects illustrative of Lynchburg's history and culture, along with building partnerships among organizations, businesses, and individuals who share that goal. The foundation also presents annual merit awards recognizing property owners and developers who have made significant investments in restoring historic buildings across the city — an important incentive in a community where preservation and downtown revitalization go hand in hand.
That work matters because Lynchburg has an unusually rich building stock for a city of its size: eight historic districts and 35 individually listed properties appear on the National Register of Historic Places, and historic preservation plays a prominent role in the city's downtown and riverfront revitalization plans. Through its programs, awards, and advocacy, the Lynchburg Historical Foundation helps ensure that the Hill City's nineteenth- and early twentieth-century architecture remains part of its future. The foundation is supported by memberships and donations, and its offices are open to the public Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
