About the Historical Society

Founded in 1898, the State Historical Society of Missouri (SHSMO) is a leading research institution dedicated to collecting, preserving, and making accessible the history of the Show-Me State. Headquartered at the Center for Missouri Studies in Columbia, the Society carries out its mission through exhibitions, public programs, publications, and an active community of members, volunteers, and scholars who contribute thousands of hours of work each year.
Research Centers and Collections
One of the Society's defining strengths is its statewide network of research centers, which place manuscripts, newspapers, photographs, and art within reach of researchers across Missouri. These include:
